Mother India elects: Her her Modi.
Looks like Narendra Modi is all ready to take charge at New Delhi. And it's time for the Congress and its poster duo, Rahul and Sonia, to concede defeat. As for BJP, it will have to come to terms with the personality cult, that is Modi, on whose bandwagon they rode to power. Expectations are high, both within the country and outside. Stock markets have risen to stratospheric levels brushing aside concerns regarding the fragile state of the economy. Investments are expected to gush in, in anticipation of a slew of liberal policies from the NDA Government. But poor monsoons, high inflation and a general slowing down of demand in the economy may be causes for worry. A possible threat Modi may face is from within the NDA from those who perceive him as authoritarian and put his own personal agenda for the nation over the party's. There will always be divisive forces, maybe secretly abetted by the ousted Congress, out to fracture the polity of the nation even further. Then there will always be the avaricious industrial groups who will demand their pound of flesh, in this case, the Adanis, believed to be major financiers of the Modi campaign.
India may grow exponentially under the Modi regime. But will it be a privileged few who will reap the rewards of growth, or a burgeoning middle class? Will the poor or have-nots be forgotten and miss out on the bus of growth as they have frequently done over the past two decades? After all, the number of poor in India equal that of the entire African continent. Will the ugly head of communalism rise? There will be no dearth of folks trying to dredge up Godhra and the Gujarat of 2002. Will the RSS get a shot in the arm and resort to their vitriolic ways? Will Modi be able to rope in regional satraps to his fold and "vision" for the nation? After all India is not a homogeneous state like Gujarat, which was much easier to manage. But, a change is any day welcome after the ineffectuality of the Manmohan-Gandhi family regime.
