Nigerian blasts: 44 killed in mosque and restaurant attack in city of Jos.
A restaurant and a mosque that were the targets of a terrorist attack left 44 people dead in the central Nigerian city of Jos. Explosives planted in the restaurant accounted for 23 lives while a suicide bomber inside the mosque premises added to 21 more. The blasts takes the total number of dead in Nigeria in the past couple of days to 200. The blast at Jos came on the heels of the breaking of the Ramadan fast and when crowds were at their most. Sources say that the main
target of the attack was the imam of mosque, Sheikh Yahya Muhammad Sani Jingir, who fortunately survived the blast. Jinjir has been a target of the Boko Haram for quite some time for his strong views against the terror group's activities.
He has even written a book which criticizes the ideology of the group. Boko Haram means "Western education is forbidden".Meanwhile the Nigerian army is reported to have released 180 people suspected to have been linked to Boko Haram after having ensured their innocence. Interrogation and treatment of suspects by the armed forces has been a thorny issue in Nigeria, with Amnesty International accusing the authorities of causing thousands of custodial deaths.
Attacks by Boko Haram during the holy month of Ramadan have not been uncommon. The terror group has been trying to forge ties to the ISIL which has called for "a month's disaster for the unbelievers." More alarming is the recruiting of young women as suicide bombers. A 13-year old bomber blew herself up near a mosque in the northern Nigerian city of Kano two days ago.
The recent attacks in Jos have left many surprised as it is situated in central Nigeria and far from the Northern Eastern states where the Boko Haram operates. The group has reportedly taken control of large swathes of areas in the border states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa where it has declared a caliphate - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law.
